Our programmes develop essential intellectual skills so our students can flourish at University and beyond…
Independent research
- Enrichment offers the opportunity to conduct an independent research project – supervised by experienced, and highly qualified academic staff. Inspiration for independent research comes not only from each other, but also from our many visiting academics, writers, scientists, artists and our legendary Curiosity Shop.
- PhD ambassadors at the University of Kent mentor our Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) students, providing guidance and insight into the world of academic research, as well as access to the University’s Templeman Library.
- We believe that projects stimulate great creativity, and we find that our students find this immensely satisfying and love showcasing their successes.
Critical Thinking, Communication and Debate
- We incorporate seminars, debates, and discussions into the curriculum to encourage students to articulate and defend their viewpoints.
- We encourage students to question assumptions and consider multiple perspectives.
- Our Debating Society competes at a high standard in regional and national competitions.
- Emphasize essay writing, report writing, and academic writing to prepare students for university assignments.
- Offer opportunities for public speaking, presentations, and group discussions to develop oral communication skills.
Exposure to University-Level Content
- We invite university professors or guest speakers to deliver lectures or workshops through our Curiosity Shop programme.
- Organize visits to universities or virtual tours to familiarize students with academic environments. We have recently visited the University of Cambridge and have regular sessions at the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University.
- We offer extracurricular activities such as The Great Books programme, Science Society, and the Philosophy Club to stimulate intellectual engagement.
- We celebrate academic achievements and intellectual pursuits through awards, competitions, or showcases.
Mentorship and Guidance
- Academic advisors or mentors guide students in their intellectual development.
- We pair students with alumni or older peers who have successfully transitioned to university.
Technology and Digital Literacy
- We integrate technology into the curriculum to enhance learning and prepare students for digital tools used in universities.
- Teach digital literacy, including how to evaluate online sources and use technology for research and collaboration.
- Encourage the use of educational software, AI, coding, and data analysis tools.
Collaborative Learning
- We encourage group projects and collaborative learning to develop teamwork and communication skills.
- Peer review and group discussions help students learn from each other and refine their ideas.
- We foster a collaborative environment where students feel comfortable sharing and debating ideas.
Leadership & Growth Mindset
- Beyond academics, pupils can join our unique Leadership Programme, designed to build character and essential life skills.
- Opportunities include serving as prefects or on the School Council, developing teamwork through the Combined Cadet Force and Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and mentoring younger pupils through sports coaching or reading support.
